Australian visitor visa for a Thai partner or relative: a sponsor's guide
Most Thai visitors apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) online. Australian hosts are often asked whether to sponsor formally and what evidence helps show the visit is genuine.
Last reviewed September 2026. General guidance only; confirm with Department of Home Affairs – Visitor visa 600.
Which subclass 600 stream should a Thai relative use?
Tourist stream for holidays or family visits, Business Visitor stream for meetings, and Sponsored Family stream when an eligible Australian relative formally sponsors the trip. Each has different evidence requirements.
Is the sponsored family stream better?
Not automatically. It lets an eligible relative sponsor and may involve a security bond. For many applicants, the tourist stream with a strong support letter is simpler.
What does 'genuine visitor' mean?
Officers assess whether the applicant intends a temporary stay, looking at circumstances in Thailand, travel history, the purpose of the visit and consistency across the application.
Will the visitor need a health examination?
It depends on the length of stay, age, planned activities and personal history. If requested, examinations are done at approved clinics listed by Home Affairs.
Can a visitor apply for a partner visa while in Australia?
Some visitor visas carry a 'no further stay' condition, which blocks most onshore applications. Check the visa grant notice before planning an onshore application.
