Canada visitor visa for a Thai partner or parent: what hosts should know

Canada assesses visitor applications from Thailand online, usually without an interview. Hosts can make the file clearer by providing a proper invitation letter and proof of status, while the applicant shows why they will return home.

Last reviewed September 2026. General guidance only; confirm with IRCC – Visit Canada.

What should a Canadian invitation letter contain?

The host's full details and status in Canada, the relationship, the purpose and length of the visit, where the visitor will stay and who pays for what. Attach proof of status such as a passport copy or PR card.

Does the Thai applicant need biometrics?

Most applicants give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre after submitting online. Biometrics are generally valid for several years, so repeat applicants may not need to give them again.

Do Thai documents need translation?

Documents not in English or French need a translation plus an affidavit or certification as IRCC requires. Submitting untranslated documents is a common reason for delays.

What is the Super Visa?

A long-stay visitor option for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It has its own income and medical insurance requirements, which should be checked on the IRCC website.

Can a visitor switch to a study permit inside Canada?

Only in limited cases. The usual route is to apply from outside Canada with a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution.
