Japan trips and long stays for a Thai partner or relative: a host's guide

Thai citizens can visit Japan for short stays without a visa, so most questions from hosts are about what happens at the airport and what is needed for longer stays such as marriage, study or work.

What can a Thai visitor do on visa-free entry?

Tourism, visiting friends or family, and short business meetings. Paid work is not allowed, and the permitted stay is set by the immigration officer on arrival within the published limit.

Why are some Thai visitors refused entry at the airport?

Officers may refuse entry if the purpose, accommodation or return plans are unclear, or if previous stays suggest work. A host can help by giving the visitor their address, contact details and a clear itinerary to carry.

What is a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?

A document issued by the Immigration Services Agency in Japan confirming that the applicant meets the conditions of a residence status such as spouse, student or worker. The host or sponsor usually applies in Japan, then the Thai applicant uses it for the visa at the Japanese embassy.

What does a Japanese spouse need to prepare for a spouse visa?

Typically family register and marriage records, proof of income and tax, and a written account of how the couple met. Consistency between both partners' documents matters more than volume.

Does a guarantor take on legal debts?

The guarantor for immigration purposes makes a moral commitment about living costs, return travel and legal compliance. It is not usually treated as a legal debt guarantee, but it should still be taken seriously.
