UK visitor visa for a Thai partner or relative: what sponsors should know

UK visitor applications from Thailand are assessed on the evidence uploaded, usually without an interview. Sponsors can help most by supplying clear, consistent documents and by making sure the applicant's own finances make sense.

Last reviewed September 2026. General guidance only; confirm with GOV.UK – Standard Visitor visa.

What should a UK sponsor include?

A signed letter stating the relationship, purpose, dates, where the visitor will stay and what costs you will cover, plus proof of your status, address and finances. Keep it factual and consistent with the application form.

Why do large recent deposits cause problems?

Caseworkers look for funds that are genuinely available and explained. A large deposit just before applying, without a clear source, can suggest borrowed money. Explain the source with documents rather than moving money around.

Must previous refusals be declared?

Yes. Every previous refusal for any country must be declared truthfully. Failing to disclose can lead to refusal for deception and a re-entry ban, which is far worse than the original refusal.

Can a Thai visitor get a 2, 5 or 10-year visa?

Long-term visitor visas can be requested, but the applicant must show they will visit regularly and still meet the rules on every trip. A strong travel history with the UK helps.

Does a Thai citizen need a UK ETA instead of a visa?

Thai citizens currently need a visa to visit the UK, and the ETA is for nationalities that do not. Rules change, so check GOV.UK before applying.
