Thai visas for travellers from ASEAN neighbours (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and others)

Citizens of ASEAN countries usually have visa-free access for short visits, so their questions are rarely about entering. They are about working legally, studying, marrying Thai nationals, and bringing family — often through land borders.

Short answer

Citizens of ASEAN countries usually have visa-free access for short visits, so their questions are rarely about entering. They are about working legally, studying, marrying Thai nationals, and bringing family — often through land borders. Rules can change, so confirm the current route with Thai e-Visa, the responsible Thai mission or the receiving authority before travel or work.

Common situations

Working in Thailand

Workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar may be employed through government-to-government (MOU) channels or other legal routes, each with its own documents. Visa-free entry never permits work.

Study

Students at Thai schools and universities use Non-Immigrant ED even if they could enter visa-free.

Marriage and family

Spouses of Thai nationals use Non-O; registering the marriage often requires translated and legalised home-country documents.

Land-border crossings

Border passes and passports have different permissions. A border pass generally restricts you to border provinces and short periods.

Document notes

  • Civil documents in Khmer, Lao, Burmese or Vietnamese need a Thai or English translation, and often legalisation.
  • Employer documents for work permits are prepared in Thai by the Thai employer.
  • Keep entry stamps and TM30 receipts — they are checked during extensions.

Mistakes we see most

  • Working on visa-free or border-pass entry
  • Travelling beyond border provinces on a border pass
  • Unregistered or untranslated marriage documents

Frequently asked questions

Can I work in Thailand if I entered visa-free?

No. Work requires a proper visa category and a work permit, or the specific MOU worker process for eligible nationalities.

Can I marry a Thai citizen while visiting?

Yes, but you usually need a certificate of freedom to marry from your embassy, translated and legalised, before registering at a Thai district office.
