Thai visas for travellers from Europe, the Americas, Australia & New Zealand

Most passports in this group can enter Thailand for tourism without applying in advance. The hard part is rarely the first arrival — it is staying longer: retiring, marrying a Thai partner, working remotely, or entering so often that border officers start asking questions.

Short answer

Most passports in this group can enter Thailand for tourism without applying in advance. The hard part is rarely the first arrival — it is staying longer: retiring, marrying a Thai partner, working remotely, or entering so often that border officers start asking questions. Rules can change, so confirm the current route with Thai e-Visa, the responsible Thai mission or the receiving authority before travel or work.

Common situations

Repeated visa-free entries

Border officers can question travellers who use visa-free entry back-to-back in a way that looks like living in Thailand. If that is your pattern, switch to a visa that matches your purpose — DTV, Non-O or Non-O-A — instead of doing border runs.

Retiring in Thailand

You can choose Non-O (then yearly extensions in Thailand) or Non-O-A / O-X (applied from abroad). The real differences are the financial evidence, health insurance, and which documents must be certified in your home country.

Spouses and families of Thai nationals

Non-O based on marriage is the usual route. A marriage registered abroad must be translated and legalised before Thai offices will accept it.

Remote workers and freelancers

Working for foreign clients while living in Thailand fits the DTV or the LTR Work-from-Thailand category far better than a tourist stay.

Document notes

  • Foreign-issued documents such as marriage certificates, income letters and police certificates may need authentication through the issuing country's available process and a Thai translation. Confirm the exact sequence with the Thai receiving office before arranging it.
  • Some embassies in Bangkok issue income letters in a specific format — check with yours before booking an immigration appointment.
  • Apply online at thaievisa.go.th through the Thai mission covering your country of residence.

Mistakes we see most

  • Relying on border runs for long stays
  • Bringing marriage or income documents without legalisation
  • Letting a yearly extension lapse before applying again

Frequently asked questions

Can I retire in Thailand on visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free entry is for short visits. Retirees use Non-O, Non-O-A or O-X and then maintain their stay with extensions and 90-day reports.

Do I need to legalise my marriage certificate?

A marriage certificate issued outside Thailand may need authentication and a Thai translation before a Thai office accepts it. The correct route depends on the issuing country and the receiving office, so confirm the required sequence first.
