Translating Thai documents for United Kingdom

Illustration of preparing documents and translations for use in United Kingdom

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) accepts Thai documents with a full English translation. Each translation should carry the translator's confirmation that it is accurate, the date, and the translator's full name and contact details. Consular legalisation is usually not needed for a visa application, but registrars or other UK bodies may ask for more.

Usual language: English · Last reviewed 2026-10-07 · Rules change; always confirm with the receiving authority.

Where these translations are used

  • Student visas

Things to watch out for

  • Translations without the translator's contact details can be rejected

Typical sequence

  2. Translate every page that carries text, including stamps and seals
  3. Attach the translator's statement in the format UKVI describes
  4. Upload the original and the translation together

Frequently asked questions

Do I need consular legalisation for a UK visa?

Usually not for the visa itself, but check the guidance for your route. Registrars and some employers or universities may set their own requirements.

Can a family member translate my documents?

UKVI focuses on the translator's confirmation and contact details. In practice an independent professional translator is the safer choice because the statement must be verifiable.

Official guidance to check

Status checked on 9 October 2026: Thailand deposited its instrument of accession on 30 June 2026, but HCCH lists entry into force for Thailand as 28 February 2027. Do not yet assume that Thai-issued documents can use an Apostille instead of consular legalisation. Recheck the status and the receiving authority's requirements before proceeding.
