Translating Thai documents for United States

Illustration of preparing documents and translations for use in United States

For USCIS petitions and immigrant visas, every foreign-language document needs a complete English translation plus a certification from the translator stating they are competent and the translation is accurate. For most non-immigrant visas, supporting documents are shown at the interview, so translations should be ready in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I translate my own documents for USCIS?

USCIS does not require a licensed translator, but the translator must sign a competency certification. Most applicants use someone other than themselves to avoid doubts.

Does the translation need to be notarised?

USCIS does not generally require notarisation of the translator's certification, though some other US bodies may.

Official guidance to check

Status checked on 9 October 2026: Thailand deposited its instrument of accession on 30 June 2026, but HCCH lists entry into force for Thailand as 28 February 2027. Do not yet assume that Thai-issued documents can use an Apostille instead of consular legalisation. Recheck the status and the receiving authority's requirements before proceeding.
