Getting a Thai Driving Licence as a Foreigner: Residence Proof, Medical and Tests

อ่านภาษาไทย (Thai version)

Thai driving licence for foreigners

Foreigners can apply for a Thai driving licence at a Department of Land Transport (DLT) office with a passport carrying a non-tourist visa or suitable stay, proof of address in Thailand, and a recent medical certificate. Holders of a valid foreign or international licence may be able to convert with fewer tests; others take the eyesight, reaction, theory and practical tests. Requirements vary slightly between offices, so check your local DLT first.

We do not publish company service prices. Ask our team for a case-specific quotation; official fees remain those announced by the authority on the filing date.

Proof of address is the usual stumbling block

DLT offices typically want a certificate of residence from Immigration or your embassy, or a work permit showing your address. Getting this document right, and recent, saves a second trip.

  • Passport with valid stay and visa page
  • Certificate of residence or work permit
  • Medical certificate from a clinic, usually recent
  • Foreign licence and translation if converting

How we work, step by step

  1. Check eligibility. We confirm whether you can convert or need full tests, based on your licence and visa.
  2. Residence document. We help you obtain the certificate of residence that the DLT accepts.
  3. Medical and translation. You visit a clinic; we translate your foreign licence if required.
  4. Book the DLT. We help with the queue or online booking system for your local office.
  5. Tests and issue. You attend the tests; the licence is issued at the office if you pass.

Questions we are asked most

Can I drive on my international driving permit?

Short-term visitors often can, alongside their home licence, but residents should obtain a Thai licence. Check current DLT and insurance rules.

Do I need to speak Thai for the test?

Many DLT offices offer the theory test in English. Ask your office when booking.

Do you publish prices or guarantee the outcome?

No. We quote after looking at your documents and situation, and every decision is made by the Thai authority concerned. We will tell you plainly when we think a plan is weak.
