Freedom to Marry Document in Thailand: Embassy Affirmation, Translation and MFA

อ่านภาษาไทย (Thai version)

Freedom-to-marry affirmation and certification

A freedom-to-marry document is the foreign partner's proof that they are not currently married. Thailand does not issue it for foreigners; it comes from the foreign national's own embassy or home authority, often as an affirmation signed in front of a consular officer. For a Thai district office it then needs a certified Thai translation and certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We do not publish company service prices. Ask our team for a case-specific quotation; official fees remain those announced by the authority on the filing date.

Different countries, different documents

Some embassies issue a certificate of no impediment after checking their own records. Others only witness a sworn statement made by their citizen. A few require documents obtained at home and then legalised. The name on the paper varies — affirmation, affidavit, certificate of no impediment, single status certificate — but the district office wants the same thing: clear evidence that you are free to marry.

We check your embassy's current procedure before you book, because some embassies need appointments weeks ahead and some do not provide the service at all in Thailand.

  • Names must be spelled exactly as in the passport
  • Previous marriages must be stated, with the divorce or death document ready
  • Occupation, address and income lines must match what you will tell the district office

How we work, step by step

  1. Identify the right document. We confirm what your embassy issues and whether anything must come from your home country first.
  2. Book and attend the embassy. You attend with your passport and any divorce papers; the embassy issues or witnesses the document.
  3. Thai translation. We translate the document into Thai with names and dates checked against your passport.
  4. MFA certification. We submit the original and translation to the Department of Consular Affairs for certification.
  5. Hand over for registration. You receive the certified set ready for the district office, with copies for your records.

Questions we are asked most

Can I get the document from my home country instead of the embassy?

Sometimes. It then usually needs legalisation by the Thai embassy in that country before Thai translation. Check which route your district office accepts.

I was divorced. What extra do I need?

Usually the final divorce decree or certificate, translated into Thai and certified. Some offices also want proof of the date the divorce became final.

Do you publish prices or guarantee the outcome?

No. We quote after looking at your documents and situation, and every decision is made by the Thai authority concerned. We will tell you plainly when we think a plan is weak.
