Bali & Indonesia for Thai Citizens 2026: 30-Day Visa Exemption vs e-VOA — Which to Choose, Rules and Bali Tourist Levy

Thai passport holders visiting Indonesia (including Bali) have two entry options: (1) the ASEAN visa exemption — free entry for 30 days, but it cannot be extended or converted, best for fixed short trips; or (2) the e-VOA applied online in advance, or VOA at the border — 30 days extendable once for another 30 days, up to 60 days total, best if your dates may change. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, you need a return or onward ticket, and travellers entering Bali must pay the separate Bali Tourist Levy through the province's official Love Bali system.
We do not publish company service prices. Ask our team for a case-specific quotation; official fees remain those announced by the authority on the filing date.
All Indonesia is separate from both the visa and Love Bali
The Indonesian Health Ministry’s 1 October 2025 announcement identifies All Indonesia as the integrated immigration, customs, health and quarantine arrival declaration for international passengers at airports and seaports. Check it even when no visa application is needed for your short visit.
Keep three records distinct: your visa or entry permission, the All Indonesia declaration and the Love Bali payment or exemption. Automated access to some portals was restricted in this review, so they are official starting points for your current case, not a claim that we filed or tested your application.
ASEAN visa exemption vs e-VOA: what is the difference?
As an ASEAN member state passport holder, Thai citizens get a 30-day visa-free entry for tourism in Indonesia without a visa application, but check All Indonesia arrival registration separately. However, this exemption cannot be extended, cannot be converted to another visa type inside Indonesia, and overstaying even one day triggers daily fines.
The alternative is the Visa on Arrival (VOA) — or the e-VOA applied for online in advance through the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration's official system. It grants 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days at a local immigration office, up to 60 days total. It suits travellers whose plans may change or who intend a longer stay.
- ASEAN exemption: 30 days, free, non-extendable
- e-VOA/VOA: 30 days, extendable once to 60 days total
- Both cover tourism, family visits and short business meetings only — no work
- Overstaying incurs daily fines and possible blacklisting
Requirements and documents to prepare
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival — airlines check this strictly before boarding. You also need a return or onward ticket, and may be asked for accommodation details and proof of sufficient funds.
If applying for the e-VOA in advance, use only the official Indonesian immigration website. Beware of third-party agent sites that add unnecessary charges. Always rely on the fees published by the authorities on the day you apply.
- Passport valid at least 6 months
- Return or onward ticket
- Accommodation and proof of funds
- Apply for e-VOA only via the official Indonesian immigration site
The Bali Tourist Levy and island-specific rules
Bali province charges foreign tourists a separate Bali Tourist Levy, independent of any visa. It is paid online in advance through the Love Bali system or at payment points at the airport — check current payment and exemption rules for your status with Love Bali before departure.
Bali has local rules visitors should respect: dress codes at temples, not riding a motorbike without an international driving permit, and strict prohibitions on volunteering or working without a permit — enforcement is real and deportations are regularly reported.
- Bali Tourist Levy is separate from the visa — pay via Love Bali
- Respect temple and local cultural rules
- Riding a motorbike requires an international driving permit and helmet
- No work or paid services of any kind on a tourist entry
How we work, step by step
- Choose your entry type. Fixed trip under 30 days: use the ASEAN exemption. If you might stay longer, choose the e-VOA from the start.
- Check passport and tickets. Passport valid at least 6 months, with a return or onward ticket.
- Apply for the e-VOA in advance (if chosen). Complete the form and pay via the official Indonesian immigration website; keep the confirmation email to show at the border.
- Pay the Bali Tourist Levy. If entering Bali, pay in advance via the Love Bali system and keep the QR code on your phone.
- Prepare documents for the border. Accommodation bookings, return ticket and proof of funds on your phone or printed.
- Clear immigration and keep records. Check the stamp or electronic record matches your entry type; if extending an e-VOA, apply before day 30.
Questions we are asked most
Do Thai citizens need a visa for Bali?
Not if you stay up to 30 days and do not need an extension — Thais get the ASEAN visa exemption. But if you might stay beyond 30 days, choose the e-VOA from the start, because the exemption cannot be extended.
What is the difference between the e-VOA and VOA at the border?
The rights are identical — 30 days, extendable once to 60 days total. The e-VOA is applied and paid for online in advance, which prepares payment ahead of time but does not guarantee a shorter queue or admission.
Can the ASEAN visa exemption be extended?
No. The 30-day exemption cannot be extended or converted. Overstaying incurs daily fines. If you are unsure of your dates, use the e-VOA from the beginning.
What is the Bali Tourist Levy and who pays it?
It is a provincial fee for foreign tourists, separate from any visa. Check liable visitors, exemptions and payment rules with Love Bali; do not assume every permit holder has the same obligation.
Can I work remotely from Bali on a tourist entry?
The exemption and VOA are designed for tourism and do not cover working for companies or clients in Indonesia. If you plan to work long-term, consult the Directorate General of Immigration about an appropriate visa category.
What happens if I overstay in Indonesia?
You are fined per day at the officially published rate, and long overstays can lead to detention, deportation and an entry ban. Always extend or depart before your permitted stay ends.
