Malaysia for Thai Citizens 2026: 30-Day Visa-Free Entry, the MDAC and What Immigration May Ask

Thai passport holders visiting Malaysia for tourism for up to 30 days are visa-exempt, but most foreign travellers must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within the three-day window including arrival day, via the Immigration Department of Malaysia portal (imigresen-online.imi.gov.my), free of charge. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and immigration may ask to see a return ticket, accommodation and proof of funds. Visa exemption does not guarantee entry.
We do not publish company service prices. Ask our team for a case-specific quotation; official fees remain those announced by the authority on the filing date.
Residence status, corrections and the egate check
The official MDAC FAQ separates Singapore passports, diplomatic or official passports, Malaysian permanent residents and Malaysian Long-Term Pass holders from ordinary visitors. A newly issued VDR/eVAL approval is not necessarily the physical residence status described by the exemption; check the FAQ before omitting registration.
For a wrong submission, follow the FAQ’s resubmission guidance. Use Check Egate Eligibility Status to assess automated clearance separately. A land-border traveller using a border pass should confirm that document’s rules with the checkpoint rather than follow instructions written only for an ordinary passport.
Do Thai citizens need a visa for Malaysia?
No. Malaysia grants visa-free entry to Thai passport holders for tourism or family visits of up to 30 days per visit — no advance visa application is needed. Check the MDAC exemption categories before submitting; passport type and Malaysian residence status matter.
The MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card) is an online entry registration that the Immigration Department of Malaysia requires from foreign travellers within the three-day window including arrival day. It is free via the official portal, is not a visa, and carries no fee.
- Tourism up to 30 days: visa-exempt
- MDAC required within the three-day window including arrival day (free)
- Submit only via the Immigration Department of Malaysia portal
- Passport valid at least 6 months
How to submit the MDAC, and what immigration may ask for
Fill in your personal details, passport number, travel dates, accommodation in Malaysia and purpose truthfully. After submitting you receive a confirmation email — keep it on your phone or printed. MDAC submission does not automatically grant autogate access. Check the portal’s Egate Eligibility Status and use an officer counter if ineligible.
Even with visa exemption, immigration officers may ask to see a return ticket, accommodation for the whole stay and proof of sufficient funds. Keep these on your phone or printed, especially for first-time visitors or land border crossings.
- Match the form to your passport and actual tickets
- Have your first accommodation ready before filling the form
- Keep the MDAC confirmation email on your phone
- Carry a return ticket, accommodation details and proof of funds
Common mistakes, and when you do need a visa or pass
Frequent problems are forgetting the MDAC, paying agent sites for something the official service provides free, and assuming the MDAC is a visa — Thai citizens do not need a visa for tourism anyway.
You need a separate visa or pass for work, long-term study, or stays over 30 days, handled with the Immigration Department of Malaysia or the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok by category. If you are unsure whether your trip fits the exemption, our team can check before you travel.
How we work, step by step
- Check the visa exemption covers you. Tourism up to 30 days with a passport valid 6 months = no visa needed.
- Prepare flight and accommodation details. Needed for the MDAC: travel dates, first accommodation and passport details.
- Submit the MDAC within the three-day window including arrival day. Free via imigresen-online.imi.gov.my, the official Immigration Department portal.
- Keep the confirmation email. Save it on your phone in case officers ask to see it.
- Prepare supporting documents for the border. Return ticket, accommodation for the full stay and proof of funds.
- Clear immigration. Check egate eligibility separately; use an officer counter if not eligible.
Questions we are asked most
Do Thai citizens need a visa for Malaysia?
No — for tourism up to 30 days, Malaysia exempts Thai passports. But you must submit the MDAC online within the three-day window including arrival day.
What is the MDAC and does it cost anything?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is an online entry registration foreign travellers submit before arriving in Malaysia. It is free via the Immigration Department portal and is not a visa.
How far in advance can I submit the MDAC?
ICA counts the arrival day: arrival on 9 October means submission from 7 October. Recheck submission instructions if the journey or health declaration changes.
Are paid MDAC services trustworthy?
The official submission is free. Paid sites are agents — submit directly through imigresen-online.imi.gov.my instead.
Do I need the MDAC when crossing by land from Thailand?
An ordinary Thai passport visitor should check MDAC for a land crossing too. Border-pass holders and people with Malaysian residence permissions must check the relevant exemption rather than applying one answer to every document.
What if I want to stay over 30 days or work?
The exemption covers only short tourism. Work, study or stays over 30 days require the appropriate pass from the Immigration Department of Malaysia before travel.
